Welcome Coin Hawks!

Welcome to the Raleigh Coin Club's young numismatist (YN) section.

First, what is a numismatist?  Well, it's a fancy word, hard to pronounce, for a collector of coins, paper currency, tokens, medals and other related materials.  So, what is a young numismatist?  The American Numismatic Association, the national organization for the hobby, defines young numismatists as "collectors ages 5 to 17."  While this section of the Raleigh Coin Club site is geared to those young numismatist, we hope beginning collectors of all ages will also find these pages useful.

Our young collectors group, known as the "Coin Hawks," meets at 6:30PM, one hour prior to the regular Raleigh Coin Club meeting, every month except December.  Our goal is to have fun with coins and learn about coins, currency, and the history associated with money, and learn how to safely handle and protect your collection.  Meeting topics differ each month and we allow the curiosity of the members to direct the meetings into new topics of interest.  The Coin Hawks are always accepting new members, so come to a meeting sometime and join the fun.  Similar to how arcade tickets can be used to buy prizes, the Coin Hawks program awards “club dollars” to kids just for participating.  These club dollars can be used to buy coins, tokens and other related prizes from the Coin Hawks store.

The regular Raleigh Coin Club meeting starts at 7:30PM right after the Coin Hawks meeting.  Coin Hawks are always welcome to stay for the regular meeting.  The regular meeting features a Show-And-Tell segment where many interesting and rare items have been shown to the audience.  After a break for refreshments, each meeting concludes with an educational presentation by one of the club members.  All presentations are interesting and informative, and usually discuss specialized collecting topics.
