An Early U.S. Flag on a North Carolina Note
Bob Schreiner highlights an April 2, 1776 North Carolina note bearing an image of the Grand Union Flag, also called the Continental Union or Cambridge flag. The note was authorized during the Fourth Provincial Congress at Halifax, the same gathering associated with the Halifax Resolves. The flag was an early symbol of the United Colonies before adoption of a thirteen-star design in 1777.
The note is also featured in a semiquincentennial exhibit developed by the N.C. History Museum and UNC’s Wilson Library. Explore the online exhibit.
A Hoard of Numismatists?
What should we call a group of coin collectors? Bob Schreiner shares several playful possibilities: a hoard, an alloy, a magpie, or a shush. Members are invited to suggest their own collective noun for numismatists.
Coin Hawks: From Large Cents to Small Cents
The Young Numismatist program revisits the origins of the U.S. cent. After reviewing the special 2026 Semiquincentennial coin designs, the group will explore the history, changing designs, and eventual replacement of the large cent by the small cent.
