Our 1997 Finale

By David W. Boitnott

The members, their families and guests met at Don Murray’s Barbecue for our finial meeting of 1997. Our Christmas meeting/party again proved to be a joyful and happy gathering as everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves. The food was excellent and the company couldn’t have been better!

After everyone had enjoyed a generous helping of barbecue with all the fixins’ (some of us enjoyed seconds) and dessert we took care of a little club business. Alex Armstrong reviewed the club’s milestones for 1997 and thanked everyone for their contributions toward making 1997 a success for the Raleigh Coin Club. Next Dave Provost awarded ANA Certificates to everyone who gave a talk in 1997. David Boitnott followed this by showing the nice ANA Certificate and pin the club got for its donation of $250 to the ANA Library. David then outlined the rules for the annual attendance prize drawing. This year’s prize was again a 1/10th ounce gold eagle and each member had one chance for each regular meeting they attended. And the winner was Sam Kirby! Also this year we added a second prize, an uncirculated Morgan dollar, for those in attendance at the Christmas party. Tom Gregg was the lucky winner. The 1998 officers and directors were then sworn into office.

Then came the part everyone was waiting for – our annual gift exchange. We have an interesting way of distributing the gifts. First we draw names to determine the order in which we go. Next each person in order opens their gift and shows it to the group. Then each following person has the choice of "stealing" an open gift or selecting an unopened one. After a gift had been "stolen" two times it was retired. The gifts ran the full range of numismatic interest. There were silver eagles, a Statue of Liberty Commemorative Set, a Canadian Commemorative dollar, an EF Stone Mountain Half Dollar, a Christmas related souvenir card, books and even road kill. Everyone had a great time!

Thanks for 1997 and lets have a great 1998.
