Smithsonian Donation

by David W. Boitnott

A $1,000 donation was given by the Raleigh Coin Club to the National Numismatic Collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., Nov. 15 during a club visit to the Smithsonian. Senior club member Halbert Carmichael gave a check to Dr. Richard Doty, curator of the collection.

Carmichael said "The Raleigh Coin Club has long had a special relationship with the National Numismatic Collection and its staff. We have been visiting annually for the last several years and Dr. Doty has been an occasional speaker at our club meetings. We are particularly pleased to be able to further the Smithsonian’s educational objectives with this gift."

Also making the visit to the Smithsonian were club members Alex Armstrong, James Gahrmann, David Boitnott, James Hearn, Steve Pladna, and David Provost. James Gahrmann, David Boitnott, Steve Pladna, and David Provost had the opportunity to view the portion of the collection not on display that is stored in the vaults. They were able to handle and examine many rare and valuable coins, including multiple Pan-Pac $50s, $50 Gold Unions, a 1913 Liberty Nickel, many varieties of Bechtler private issues, and numerous patterns. Unfortunately the 1804 dollars and 1933 $20 were on public display and not available for close inspection.
